Skyline ran through Region 10 without a loss, beating Murray 41-7 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, to claim the Eagles' first outright region championship since 2004.
The victory at home capped a 6-0 region record for Skyline (7-3 overall), which hadn't won a region title of any kind since 2013, according to the Deseret News. The Eagles entered the season as the preseason favorite in the Region 10 coaches poll but had to prove it against a field that included defending champion Highland and a Murray team that came in at 7-3 with only one region loss.
First-year head coach Brandon Matich, a Brighton graduate in his 20th season coaching in Utah, took over a program that went 9-4 and reached the 4A quarterfinals last year. He arrived alongside transfer quarterback Tate Johnson, who came from Mountain View after throwing for 1,973 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2025, according to a Deseret News preseason preview. Senior running back Jonah Mailei, an Honorable Mention All-State pick last season after rushing for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns, anchored the offense.
Skyline's path to the title ran through Highland. The Eagles beat the defending champion Rams 37-23 on Oct. 8, a result that set up the title-clinching game five days later.
"Skyline has had a hard time getting over this Highland hump, and they were able to do it tonight," Matich said after the Oct. 8 win, as reported by the Deseret News.
The Oct. 14 result against Murray was never in doubt. Skyline turned it into a 34-point blowout, extending its winning streak to five games. The Eagles have scored 354 points this season while allowing 178, according to MaxPreps.
The title run validated a preseason prediction that even Matich questioned in August. He told the Deseret News at the time that Highland deserved to be the favorite as the reigning champion.
Brighton closes at 1-9
Across town, Brighton's rebuilding season under first-year coach Josh Montzingo ended with a 48-7 loss to Alta on Oct. 14.
Alta quarterback Xavier Cocci, who transferred from Skyline before this season, threw for a touchdown and ran for another against his former crosstown rival. Ryland Clayton caught a 52-yard scoring strike from Cocci in the first quarter. Brighton finishes 1-9.
Montzingo, who spent a decade building the Park City program, said in September that his focus extended beyond the win column. "I want to see these boys become the best they can become," he told the Cottonwood Heights Journal.
Olympus streak ends at 126 games
Holladay's Olympus Titans saw their 126-game consecutive scoring streak snapped in a 35-0 loss to Bountiful on Oct. 14. The streak dated to 2015. Bountiful built a 28-0 halftime lead and held the Titans scoreless throughout.
Olympus finishes the regular season at 5-5.
