Brighton High School's tennis courts in Cottonwood Heights will host five first-round matches in the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) 6A girls state tournament Saturday, Oct. 3.

The UHSAA released the 6A brackets Thursday, Oct. 1. The Deseret News published the full draw, with each of the five positions featuring a No. 16 vs. No. 17 seed matchup at Brighton. Winners advance to the Round of 16 on Oct. 8 at Liberty Park Tennis Center in Salt Lake City, where the tournament runs through Oct. 10.

Brighton, a Class 5A school, does not compete in the 6A classification. Olympus and Skyline, also Class 5A, do not compete in 6A either. The Bengals' facility is serving as a neutral host site for the opening round.

Here are the five first-round matchups Saturday at Brighton:

  • First singles: No. 16 Nadia Bateman (Cedar Valley) vs. No. 17 Aspen Record (Layton)
  • Second singles: No. 16 Shaelynn Bates (Layton) vs. No. 17 Della Ballard (Cedar Valley)
  • Third singles: No. 16 Rachel Wilding (Riverton) vs. No. 17 Caitlyn Traynor (Cedar Valley)
  • First doubles: No. 16 Chloe Cannon/Sophie Evans (Cedar Valley) vs. No. 17 Quincy Davis/Claire Twelves (Mountain Ridge)
  • Second doubles: No. 16 Morgan Ashton/Kinley Smith (Riverton) vs. No. 17 Kamryn Mauerman/Lexi Monahan (Cedar Valley)

Cedar Valley players appear in all five draws. Layton and Riverton each have two entries.

The top seeds waiting in the Round of 16 include No. 1 first singles Kamryn Newman of Bingham and No. 1 second singles Halle Kitchen of Lone Peak. Lily Goodwin of Lone Peak holds the No. 1 third singles seed. Skyridge's Kiri Sperry and Molly Jarvie are the top first doubles seed, and teammates Anabelle Rowley and Chloe Barker hold the No. 1 second doubles seed.

Brighton's courts will see more state tournament action later in the week. The Standard-Examiner reported that the 3A girls tennis first round is also scheduled at Brighton on Oct. 8, with that tournament continuing at Liberty Park on Oct. 9 and Oct. 10.

Match times for Saturday's 6A first round at Brighton have not been announced. The UHSAA posts updated schedules on its website.
