Families at Olympus, Skyline and Cottonwood high schools have a chance to weigh in on what the 2028-29 school year will look like.
Granite School District's Calendaring Committee opened an online survey on Thursday, Oct. 1, asking parents, staff and students across the district to share their preference on the "general calendar structure" for the school year that starts two falls from now. Responses are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 19.
The survey covers how the 2028-29 school year would be organized, though the district has not publicly detailed the specific structural options under consideration. The 2027-28 calendar has already been approved and is available for download on the district's calendar page.
Granite School District enrolled 58,886 students as of May. The district serves Holladay through Olympus and Skyline high schools and the Cottonwood Heights area through Cottonwood High School. All families, teachers and students in the district are eligible to respond.
How the calendar gets made
The preference survey is the first step in a multi-stage process. After results come in, the Calendaring Committee drafts specific calendar options and posts them for a second round of public feedback. The Board of Education then votes on a final calendar, according to November 2021 board meeting minutes.
Those same minutes show the survey has historically drawn heavy participation. District officials told the board in November 2021 that the general calendar survey typically receives more than 10,000 responses.
The last time the district released detailed results, for the 2023-24 calendar cycle, 55% of respondents preferred one option and 45% preferred the other. The board adopted the majority choice, according to February 2022 board meeting minutes.
The district has not announced when the Calendaring Committee will present this survey's results to the Board of Education. Families can find the survey at graniteschools.org before the Oct. 19 deadline.
