Cottonwood Heights and Holladay residents heading to Salt Lake International Airport will lose their most direct route for more than a month starting Tuesday, July 28.

The Utah Department of Transportation announced July 27 that three northbound I-215 off-ramps will close at 8 p.m. Tuesday for bridge work:

  • Northbound I-215 to westbound I-80 (the primary airport exit): closed approximately 35 days, reopening shortly before Labor Day.
  • Northbound I-215 to eastbound I-80: closed approximately 35 days, also reopening shortly before Labor Day.
  • Northbound I-215 to Redwood Road: closed through Friday, October 2.

For residents who normally take I-215 north to reach the airport, UDOT says the alternatives are Bangerter Highway, I-15, or SR-201.

Part of a larger project

The closures fall under the I-215 West Improved project, a three-year effort that began in 2025 to repave multiple sections of I-215 between SR-201 and North Temple, replace 18 bridge decks, and repair 12 additional bridges. The full project is estimated to wrap up in late summer 2027, according to UDOT.

UDOT Project Manager John Montoya said in the July 27 announcement that the bridge-deck replacements are preventive maintenance meant to extend the life of infrastructure Utahns have already invested in.

A fourth ramp at the same interchange, Redwood Road to northbound I-215, is already closed and will remain closed through July 2027.

Rolling disruptions

The I-215/I-80 interchange near the airport has seen a series of rolling ramp closures throughout 2026 as part of the same project, the Salt Lake Tribune reported July 13. UDOT spokesperson Mitch Shaw told the Tribune that crews are paving ramp connections, replacing barriers, and restriping the road during these phases.

The airport exit is expected back by Labor Day weekend. The Redwood Road ramp stays closed until October 2.
