Four-star point guard Jamaal McKnight Jr. committed to the University of Utah on Tuesday, Oct. 27, giving head coach Alex Jensen the highest-rated point guard recruit the program has landed since Holladay's own Rylan Jones.
McKnight, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound guard from Hyattsville, Maryland, announced his decision on League Ready's Instagram Live, as first reported by the Deseret News. He chose the Utes over Kansas, UNLV and Boise State.
The commitment carries a direct Holladay connection. McKnight's 0.9376 composite rating makes him the 10th-highest-rated recruit in Utah program history and the second-highest-rated point guard, per 247 Sports data reported by the Deseret News. Only former Olympus High star Rylan Jones, rated 0.9474, ranks higher among Utah point guard recruits. Delon Wright, rated 0.9028, sits third. Wright went on to become a first-round NBA draft pick, selected 20th overall by the Toronto Raptors in 2015.
ESPN's SCNext 100 lists McKnight as the No. 94 overall prospect in the 2027 class. The 247 Sports composite ranks him No. 126 overall and the 18th-best point guard nationally.
McKnight told League Ready the campus visit sealed his decision, saying the coaching staff and atmosphere felt genuine and familial, according to the Deseret News. He noted that several Utah coaches have NBA experience, which aligned with his goal of reaching the league.
Before committing, McKnight played at DeMatha Catholic High in Hyattsville and Long Island Lutheran High in Brookville, New York. During his junior year at Long Island Lutheran, he averaged 13.6 points, 4.1 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 43% from the field and 36% from three-point range, per stats tracked by LegitGM.com as reported by the Deseret News.
He will play this season at Iowa United Prep in Des Moines, Iowa, under former NBA head coach Keith Smart. Smart coached AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall NBA draft pick this past summer, during Dybantsa's final high school season at Utah Prep in Hurricane, the Deseret News reported.
McKnight is the second commit in Utah's 2027 recruiting class, joining three-star shooting guard Pierce Thompson, rated No. 244 overall and the 16th-highest-rated recruit in Utah history by 247 Sports composite. Utah's 2026 class brought in power forward Alec Anigbata and point guard Styles Clemmons, both three-star recruits who rank in the program's top 25 all-time by 247 Sports rating, the Deseret News reported.
No schedule information for McKnight's senior season at Iowa United Prep was available at the time of publication.
