A bicyclist was critically injured Wednesday, July 22, after crashing into the back of a stopped car at the intersection of Fort Union Boulevard and 900 East in Midvale, according to the Unified Police Department.

UPD investigators were dispatched at approximately 3:14 p.m., said Aymee Race, the department's public information officer. Witnesses told police the rider had been weaving between lanes and running red lights before the collision.

"[The bicyclist] was weaving in and out of traffic and not obeying traffic laws, and there was a vehicle stopped at the intersection and the bicyclist smashed into that car that was stopped at the light," Race said at the scene.

The rider was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. No update on the bicyclist's condition has been released as of July 27. The identity, age, and gender of the rider have not been disclosed.

The driver of the stopped vehicle was not reported injured.

Road closures and investigation

The Utah Department of Transportation confirmed all northbound lanes on 900 East at Fort Union Boulevard were closed during the investigation. Race asked motorists to avoid the area while UPD's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction team worked the scene.

The CAR unit is a multi-jurisdictional team that responds to crashes involving substantial bodily injury or fatalities, according to UPD. The department has a full-time sworn member assigned to the unit. Race said at approximately 4:15 p.m. that the team would remain on scene until the investigation was complete.

UPD serves as the primary law enforcement agency for Holladay. Fort Union Boulevard and 900 East is a major commuter intersection that connects Midvale, Holladay, and Cottonwood Heights neighborhoods.

Investigation ongoing

No charges or citations had been announced in connection with the crash as of July 27. UPD has not released a timeline for completing its investigation.
