Brighton and Olympus each punched their tickets to the 5A girls soccer semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 15, giving Cottonwood Heights and Holladay two teams in the final four.
The No. 4 Bengals shut out No. 12 West Field 1-0 at Brighton High School. The No. 3 Titans topped No. 11 Viewmont 2-1 in a separate quarterfinal. Both teams play Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Zions Bank Stadium.
Brighton 1, West Field 0
Savannah Zenger scored the only goal of the match, breaking through a stubborn West Field defense in the second half. It was the second straight postseason that Zenger eliminated the Longhorns. She knocked them out last year on a free kick.
The first half was scoreless but not quiet. Zenger hit the crossbar with about 15 minutes left before halftime, setting off a frantic scramble in front of the goal. Teammate Abigail Platz forced West Field goalkeeper Harlie Slaughter into a punch save in the final seconds of the half.
"We knew they keep games close and that we would have to be patient," Zenger said after the win, according to the Deseret News.
Brighton head coach Sara Cowley said she told her players at halftime that the chances were there and they needed to settle down and stick with their game. The patience paid off when Zenger connected on a shot in the box midway through the second half.
Goalkeeper Lilah Sligting recorded the shutout for Brighton. West Field had reached the quarterfinals after upsetting No. 5 Box Elder in the first round on penalty kicks.
Olympus 2, Viewmont 1
Taylor Beck's go-ahead goal lifted the Titans past Viewmont in a back-and-forth quarterfinal. Jade Cavazos also scored for Olympus, which had beaten Viewmont twice during the regular season by three or more goals each time, according to the Deseret News.
Viewmont's Lucy Layton tied the game, but the Vikings could not hold off the Titans' attack for the full match.
