Cottonwood Heights City Hall is closed Friday, July 24, for Pioneer Day, giving residents a long weekend and a slate of nearby celebrations to fill it.

The city announced on its official Instagram account Monday, July 21, that offices would also be closed Thursday, July 23, with regular hours resuming Monday, July 28.

For those looking to mark Pioneer Day on Friday, July 24, several events are a short drive from Cottonwood Heights and Holladay:

  • Millcreek Common (bordering Cottonwood Heights to the north): Line dancing, roller skating, and live music from 6 to 9 p.m. Free pie slices and root beer floats while supplies last.
  • Days of '47 Parade: 9 a.m. at South Temple and State Street in Salt Lake City.
  • This Is The Place Heritage Park: Family celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a flag ceremony at 10:30 a.m., handcart parade, candy cannon, and watermelon eating contest.
  • Liberty Park drone show: Free, 10 to 10:30 p.m. Leashed dogs permitted.

No Holladay-specific Pioneer Day events have been announced.

Red, White & Bloom yard contest

Cottonwood Heights is also participating in America250, the nationwide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, through its Red, White & Bloom community recognition program. Residents can nominate neighbors whose yards show off patriotic flair, according to the Holladay Journal's July 20 America250 roundup by reporter Cassie Goff. Winners will be announced in August.

America250 across Utah

More than 90 Utah counties and cities are incorporating the anniversary into parades, festivals, and public gatherings, according to the Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement. Gov. Spencer J. Cox launched the state's America250 initiative on July 1, 2025, at the Utah State Capitol, calling it the beginning of "a new era of patriotism."

Two exhibits remain open through the end of July for residents interested in a day trip:

The Museum of Utah, an extension of the Utah Historical Society, opened Saturday, June 27, at 450 N. State Street in Salt Lake City. Its "Past is Personal" exhibit explores the nation's history through the lens of remembering and perspective. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday (history.utah.gov/museum).

"The American Mosaic," a collective portrait of artwork submitted by residents of Herriman, Riverton, Bluffdale, West Jordan, and South Jordan, is on display at Herriman City Hall (5355 W. Main St.) through July 31.
