Cottonwood Heights residents can weigh in on how their city grows and develops at a General Plan Open House on Wednesday, July 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Hall, 2277 E. Bengal Blvd. Those who cannot attend in person can participate online through the city's website at ch.utah.gov.
The open house comes one day after the City Council's work session and business meeting on Tuesday, July 21, where CED Director Jim Spung will brief council members on the General Plan update itself. The city promoted the event on its official Facebook page, calling the General Plan "the long-term vision that guides how Cottonwood Heights grows, develops, and preserves" the community.
Council meeting highlights
Mayor Gay Lynn Bennion will preside over the work session starting at approximately 4 p.m. and the business meeting at 7 p.m., both at City Hall.
The work session features a briefing from Canyons School District, with presentations from Public Engagement Coordinator Susan Edwards, CFO Leon Wilcox, and Canyons Board President Amber Shill. Jim Kichas will deliver a Historic Committee report.
The 7 p.m. business meeting carries five action items, two with immediate consequences for city operations:
- Ordinance 470 would amend the Residential Multi-Family Zone code (CHC Sections 19.34.050, 19.34.060, and 19.34.100).
- Resolution 2026-55 would approve a consulting agreement with Kimley-Horn and Associates for a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan under the U.S. DOT's Safe Streets and Roads for All program.
- Resolutions 2026-57 and 2026-58 would approve transition services with outgoing City Attorney Wm. Shane Topham, who retires Thursday, August 6, and an employment agreement with Todd Sheeran as the new city attorney effective the same day.
Council members Matt Holton, Suzanne Hyland, Shawn Newell, and Ellen Birrell will each give committee reports. Finance Director Scott Jurges will present a finance report.
