A man died Wednesday, Aug. 12, after his SUV veered off the road, went airborne and rolled near 3900 South and 1300 East in Millcreek, just west of Holladay's boundary.

The single-vehicle crash happened just before noon, according to KUTV. Witnesses reported seeing the SUV strike mailboxes and a cement post before launching into the air and slamming into a car parked outside a local business.

Unified Police Department Sgt. Aymee Race, the agency's public information officer, said first responders and bystanders tried to help the driver. He died at the scene. His identity had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.

"Our heart goes out to the family who just received devastating news from our detectives," Race told KUTV. "We have our mental health unit out with them right now, assisting them in any way they need."

The Unified Police Department, which provides all police services for both Millcreek and Holladay, shut down westbound and eastbound traffic on 3900 South from the crash site to just west of Highland Drive and 1300 East while investigators worked the scene. Race said the closure would likely last "a couple hours" but did not give an exact reopening time.

The cause of the crash had not been determined as of Wednesday, Aug. 12. UPD's investigation is ongoing, and the Salt Lake County Medical Examiner's Office will separately investigate the cause of death.

The crash is the third fatal collision in the Millcreek and Cottonwood Heights area since mid-July. A longboard rider was killed on 3900 South near 971 East on July 25, and two motorcyclists died in separate Cottonwood Heights crashes on July 17.
