Holladay homeowners face a proposed 11.2% property tax rate increase from the Granite School District, and Tuesday, Aug. 18, is the last chance to speak up before the board votes.

The district's Truth in Taxation hearing begins at 6 p.m. at the Granite Education Center, 2500 S. State St., Salt Lake City. Budget Officer Todd Hauber will present the proposal, which would generate roughly $21.7 million in new revenue to fund operational and capital priorities, according to the board's published agenda. Board President McDermott will preside.

The increase directly affects families whose children attend Olympus High School, Skyline High School and Olympus Junior High.

Three ways to comment

In person: Sign up on the sheet in the foyer outside Auditorium A before or during the meeting. No advance registration is required.

Via Zoom: Fill out the online public comment form at graniteschools.org/board/public-comment/ and check the box for virtual comments. The district will email instructions directly to registrants.

In writing: Email your comment to [email protected]. It will be entered into the official record.

Watch from home

The district confirmed Aug. 17 that a live stream will be available on its website beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Viewers may need to refresh the page to see the video player. The stream will also air on the Granite School District YouTube channel.

As we reported Aug. 12, the district first announced the three comment options last week but had not yet activated the live stream page.

What's at stake

The proposed rate would be 11.2% above the certified tax rate set by the state. The board agenda describes the revenue as funding "various operational and capital priorities," though the full Property Tax Impact Schedule detailing the per-household dollar impact was not available online as of Aug. 17.

The hearing is the public's formal opportunity to comment before the board acts on the rate. The district has not announced when the final vote will take place.
