Holladay and Cottonwood Heights residents who take I-215 west to I-80 to reach Salt Lake City International Airport are losing their most direct route. Multiple ramp closures at the I-80/I-215 interchange have stacked up as part of a massive UDOT construction project, with the nearest reopening dates on Monday, July 20, and some closures lasting into 2027.
North Temple closes completely this weekend
North Temple from Redwood Road to 2200 West will shut down entirely beginning Friday, July 17, at 8 p.m. through early Monday, July 20. UTA's TRAX service will be affected during the closure; a bus bridge will operate in its place. Daytime lane closures on North Temple will continue through August after the full shutdown ends, according to UDOT.
Active ramp closures at the I-80/I-215 interchange
UDOT confirmed in a July 13 press release that the following ramps remain closed:
- Eastbound I-80 to northbound I-215 — closed through Monday, July 20
- Westbound I-80 to northbound I-215 — closed through Monday, July 20
- Westbound I-80 to southbound I-215 — closed through mid-August
- Redwood Road to northbound I-215 — closed through July 2027
Drivers will not have direct access between I-80 and the I-215 interchange while the closures overlap, according to UDOT.
Nightly lane restrictions through July 20
UDOT also listed nightly lane closures in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Monday, July 20:
- California Avenue
- The ramp from Redwood Road to southbound I-215 (reduced to one lane)
- Northbound I-215
$150 million project continues through 2027
The closures are part of the $150 million I-215 West Improved project, which is reconstructing I-215 from State Route 201 to just north of I-80, rehabilitating 30 bridges, and repaving 14 miles of ramps. UDOT has staggered ramp closures so not all close at once, though some overlap. Most individual ramp closures last between 20 and 40 days.
UDOT spokesperson Mitch Shaw said in a July 13 news release that crews are using the closures to "pave the ramp connections, replace barriers and restripe the road."
When UDOT marked the project's halfway point on June 12, Region Two Director Robert Stewart urged drivers to be patient, noting the project had already completed 13 bridges and shifted traffic onto new pavement. He asked motorists to slow down and stay alert in what remains an active work zone.
The full project is expected to wrap up in late summer 2027.
