Intermountain Medical Center in Murray reopened fully Tuesday morning, Aug. 18, ending the ambulance diversions and appointment cancellations that followed a fatal shooting in Kearns on Monday, Aug. 17.

The hospital's return to normal operations means Cottonwood Heights and Holladay ambulances can again route to the area's primary trauma center without delay. As we reported Aug. 17, the facility had entered what Intermountain calls a "Secure Campus Response" after shooting victims arrived from a church in Kearns around 11:25 a.m. Monday.

Under that response, all outpatient appointments were canceled or rescheduled, ambulances were temporarily sent to other hospitals, and a large police presence surrounded the campus well into Monday evening.

Intermountain Health spokesperson Jess Gomez confirmed Tuesday that no threat ever materialized on campus. "There was never a threat to caregivers or patients – and no incidents on campus," Gomez told ABC4. She said patients already inside the hospital continued to receive care throughout the lockdown, and the system is now working with patients whose appointments were affected.

No arrests were made at the hospital.

Unified Police Department Assistant Chief Justin Hoyal said Monday that multiple law enforcement agencies surrounded IMC "out of an abundance of caution" after the shooting, which killed 18-year-old Vilisoni Angilau and left two others in critical condition.

The shooting occurred outside a church at 4660 W. 5015 S. in Kearns during a funeral. Unified Police said officers had been asked to maintain a presence near the service beforehand due to concerns about potential problems. Afuhia Masiu Manatau, 45, has been arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of first-degree felony murder and felony discharge of a firearm, according to KJZZ. Police allege he gave the gun to his 17-year-old son, who was also hospitalized in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Intermountain said it is working with patients whose Monday appointments were disrupted and apologized for the inconvenience. No further restrictions are in place at the hospital.
