A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of 1300 East and Van Winkle Expressway in Holladay on Thursday, July 30, and transported to the hospital in serious condition, the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office confirmed to ABC4 and KSL.
The crash shut down Van Winkle Expressway at 1300 East on Thursday evening, with the Utah Department of Transportation warning travelers to avoid the area and expect heavy delays. Initial estimates placed the reopening at approximately 11:35 p.m., though the Sheriff's Office said it expected the road to reopen soon.
An SLCSO spokesperson confirmed the pedestrian's condition as "serious" but did not release the victim's identity, age, or gender. The Sheriff's Office has not said whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk, what direction the vehicle was traveling, or whether the driver remained at the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Second serious pedestrian crash on the expressway this year
The Thursday night crash is the second time in 2026 that a pedestrian has been seriously injured on Van Winkle Expressway in Holladay. On March 2, the road was closed at 5600 South after a man was struck by a vehicle in a pedestrian crash, according to ABC4 reporting at the time. That collision also shut down all lanes while emergency crews responded.
