A sinkhole forced Cottonwood Heights to close part of Creek Road near Water Vista Way on Tuesday, Aug. 18, with city officials warning that repairs could stretch over several days.

Cottonwood Heights Public Works crews responded to assess the damage and begin work at the site. The city has not identified a cause for the collapse.

No specific reopening date has been announced.

Drivers who normally use Creek Road should take Danish Oaks Drive or Oak Creek Drive while the closure remains in effect, according to ABC4, which first reported the closure Tuesday morning with photos from resident Dennis Dolan showing the scene. KUTV reporter Jonathan May confirmed the multi-day repair estimate and the same alternate routes.

City officials have not said whether the sinkhole is related to a water main break, stormwater infrastructure or another underground failure. The exact segment of Creek Road affected has not been specified beyond the Water Vista Way area.

Residents who rely on Creek Road for access to neighborhoods east of Fort Union Boulevard should plan extra time using Danish Oaks Drive or Oak Creek Drive until the city announces a reopening.
