Skyline blew a 10-point halftime lead Thursday, Aug. 13, falling 14-10 to Stansbury in the Eagles' season opener at Skyline High School in Holladay.

The No. 1 team in the preseason Region 10 coaches poll looked sharp early. Kicker Matthew Payne drilled a 27-yard field goal midway through the first quarter, and quarterback Tate Johnson connected with Tu'i Will on a 38-yard touchdown strike with 35 seconds left in the second quarter. Payne added the extra point, and Skyline took a 10-0 lead into the break.

Then the Eagles' offense went cold.

Stansbury quarterback Brighton Reutzel found receiver Lincoln Reutzel for a 4-yard touchdown with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 10-7. The same combination struck again on a 9-yard scoring pass with 7:22 left in the fourth. Seth Wilcox converted both extra points, and the Stallions led for the first time all night.

Skyline never answered. The Eagles managed zero second-half points in what the Deseret News described as a defensive struggle decided in the final quarter.

The game was one of three Thursday night openers kicking off the 2026 Utah high school football season, broadcast live by KSL Sports' Game Night Live crew from Skyline High.

The loss stings for an Eagles program that entered 2026 with high expectations after a nine-win 2025 campaign that ended in the 4A quarterfinals. Stansbury, which also won nine games and reached the quarterfinals last year, improved to 1-0.

As we reported Wednesday, Noland Parry's Power Guide had Skyline as an underdog against Stansbury's returning all-state quarterback, and Brighton Reutzel delivered on that billing with both second-half scoring drives.

Skyline (0-1) hosts Lone Peak on Friday, Aug. 28, in a nonregion home matchup at Skyline High.
