Brighton, Olympus and Skyline all face uphill battles in Week 5 of the high school football season, with none of the three area teams favored to win.

The Deseret News' Parry Power Guide, published Wednesday, Sept. 9, rates all three local squads as underdogs. Both Noland Parry and high school sports editor James Edward pick against Brighton, Olympus and Skyline in their respective matchups.

Brighton (1-3) hosts West (4-0), Thursday, Sept. 10

The Bengals welcome unbeaten West to Freestone Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. West carries a power rating of 108.5 to Brighton's 98.4, a gap of 10.1 points.

West routed Hunter 54-6 in Week 4, with quarterback Kamden Lopati throwing for 302 yards and five touchdowns. The Panthers are ranked No. 14 in the Mountain West Top 25.

Brighton, ranked No. 32 by MaxPreps, is still finding its footing under new head coach Josh Montzingo. The Bengals fell to Crimson Cliffs 36-13 on Sept. 4 after leading 13-10 at halftime. A 51-yard pass to Easton Gustafson highlighted the first half, but Crimson Cliffs pulled away in the second.

Montzingo, who compiled an 82-39 record in 10 years as Park City's head coach, warned in an August Deseret News preview that his young team would face a steep learning curve: "We will be young but talented this season … with a tough pre-region schedule, we will have to grow up fast."

Brighton's nonregion slate was built to test the program, with opponents including Ridgeline, the two-time reigning 4A state champion, and Crimson Cliffs, last year's 4A runner-up.

Olympus (2-2) at Davis (2-2), Friday, Sept. 11

The Titans face the biggest point spread of the three local matchups. Davis holds a power rating of 114.9 to Olympus's 89.0, a 25.9-point gap.

Davis is ranked No. 8 by MaxPreps and No. 10 in the Mountain West Top 25. The Darts beat Alta 27-6 in Week 4, with Oklahoma commit Bode Sparrow scoring three touchdowns including a 96-yard kickoff return.

Olympus, ranked No. 17 by MaxPreps, is rebuilding under first-year head coach Casey Evans, an Olympus alum and former three-time All-Mountain West selection at Utah. The Titans lost 34 players to graduation, including 5A All-State First Team linebacker Adam Bywater, now at BYU.

Evans opened his tenure with a 49-14 rout of Cedar Valley on Aug. 14, building a 49-0 halftime lead. After that season-opening win, Evans told the Deseret News: "We had a fast start to the game and we never slowed down."

Skyline (2-2) at Skyridge (3-1), Friday, Sept. 11

Skyline faces the steepest odds of any local team. Skyridge holds a power rating of 125.2 to Skyline's 79.2, a 46.0-point difference.

Skyridge, ranked No. 6 in the Mountain West Top 25, features quarterback Jagger Fountaine, who threw three first-half touchdown passes against Liberty (Nevada) in Week 4. Skyline, ranked No. 42 by MaxPreps, is playing 4A football this season despite being a 5A school and faces a 6A Skyridge program.

Head coach Brandon Matich, in his 20th year as a head coach in Utah, has guided the Eagles to a 2-2 start.

The predictors' track records

Parry's season record stands at 168-56 (75.0%). Edward has been sharper at 180-43 (80.7%). Both went against all three local teams this week.

Brighton hosts Viewmont on Sept. 18. Olympus travels to Alta on Sept. 18 before hosting rival Brighton on Sept. 25.
