A garage fire in Holladay on Tuesday, July 14, was the fourth fire Unified Fire Authority crews responded to in and around the Holladay-Millcreek area since Sunday, July 12.
The garage was fully involved when firefighters arrived early Tuesday morning, UFA said in a statement reported by ABC4. The cause is under investigation, and the cost of damages has not been determined. No specific address has been released.
The blaze capped a punishing stretch for UFA crews working through triple-digit heat. The agency said firefighters battled multiple fires "through the evening and overnight in 100+ degree temperatures with little opportunity for rest."
Four fires in four days
The cluster began Sunday, July 12, when a grass fire ignited near Tanner Park in Salt Lake City, burning four acres and prompting brief evacuations. That fire was just outside the Holladay-Millcreek boundary but drew UFA resources from the area.
Hours later, at approximately 8:45 p.m. Sunday, crews were dispatched to a fully involved house fire near 1990 E. Gregson Ave. in Millcreek. Several homes were evacuated as flames encroached on nearby properties. One firefighter sustained heat-related injuries, and one other person suffered smoke inhalation.
Then at approximately 3:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, a fire broke out in the attic of a Millcreek home. Crews worked more than an hour to extinguish it. All occupants were safely evacuated and treated on scene for possible smoke inhalation. No injuries were reported from that fire.
Stretched across the heat wave
UFA Station 104 in Holladay is staffed around the clock with a four-person engine and a two-person ambulance, positioned to achieve a four-minute travel time within the city, UFA Captain Dan Brown told the Holladay City Council on April 16. The agency operates 695 personnel across 26 stations.
The cause of the Holladay garage fire remains under investigation. Residents who want to reach UFA's Holladay liaison, Captain Dan Brown, can call (801) 403-0787.
