Weber quarterback Carter Payne threw a game-winning touchdown pass with 2:44 left to beat Brighton 38-31 on Wednesday, Aug. 26, in Ogden.

The loss dropped the Bengals to 1-1 in their first season under head coach Josh Montzingo. Brighton had opened 2026 with a dominant 34-0 road win over West Field on Aug. 15.

Wednesday's result was a sharp contrast. The Deseret News called it a "wild" contest, and Payne's stat line explains why. The Weber quarterback completed 24 of 32 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns. The Deseret News named his outing the top Class 6A individual performance of Week 2.

Brighton kept pace through most of the game, scoring 31 points against a Weber defense that allowed points on nearly every Bengal possession. But Payne's final strike with under three minutes remaining put Weber ahead for good.

The result gives Montzingo his first taste of adversity at Brighton. The former Park City head coach arrived in June after 13 years at Park City High School, including 10 as head coach, where he compiled an 82-39 record and won four region championships. He replaced Casey Sutera, who left for Corner Canyon after earning three Region 6 titles in four seasons.

"I'm excited to coach at this level at Brighton … I've played against Brighton in very competitive games with Brighton and Park City," Montzingo said in June when he was introduced as head coach. "I know how good this program is."

The Bengals now face a quick turnaround as they look to regroup for Week 3. Brighton's opponent and game date had not been posted as of Thursday, Aug. 27.
