Salt Lake County recorded 10 flu hospitalizations in the two weeks before Oct. 8, about five times the usual pace. The Salt Lake County Health Department is urging residents to get vaccinated before the season worsens.

"At this point in the season, we'd usually see one hospitalization a week at most," a county epidemiologist told Fox 13. "We're seeing certainly more than we would expect at this time of year."

Flu activity typically does not build until late December or January, the health department said. State epidemiologists say this year's season started earlier, with more cases diagnosed than in prior years, ABC4 reported Thursday, Oct. 8.

The department uses the phrase "flu before the boo" to remind people to get their shots before Halloween. This year, the health department says the urgency is sharper because cases are spiking weeks ahead of Oct. 31.

A flu shot can take up to two weeks to reach full effectiveness. Residents who get vaccinated now would have immunity in place before Halloween gatherings begin.

COVID-19 is also circulating locally. The county recorded six COVID hospitalizations in the most recent reporting week, according to Fox 13.

Where to get vaccinated

The county immunization clinic closest to Cottonwood Heights and Holladay is at 9340 South 700 East in Sandy. It is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Fridays. The clinic closes daily from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

Appointments are required but same-day slots are often available. Residents can book by calling 385-468-SHOT (385-468-7468).

Three vaccine types are offered at county clinics: the mRNA flu vaccine, a high-dose shot for older adults and the nasal mist. Nurses on site help patients choose. Prices range from $31 to $113 depending on the type.

Flu shots are also available at doctors' offices and pharmacies across Salt Lake County.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a flu vaccine for everyone six months and older. The CDC says the shot lowers the risk of serious illness, hospitalization and death, especially for older adults, young children, pregnant people and those with underlying health conditions.
