Families in Holladay will be packing lunches and setting alarms five days before their neighbors in Cottonwood Heights this August, as the two districts serving the area open on different dates for the 2026-27 school year.
Granite School District, which serves Holladay, starts classes for all elementary, middle, and high school students on Wednesday, August 12. Canyons School District, which serves Cottonwood Heights, follows on Monday, August 17, according to start-date listings published by ABC4's Sorina Trauntvein and confirmed by KUTV.
Kindergartners in both districts get a few extra days at home. Granite kindergarten begins Monday, August 17. Canyons kindergarten starts Wednesday, August 19.
Registration deadlines are days away
For Granite District families, online re-enrollment for currently enrolled students opens Friday, July 31, according to Taylorsville High School's website. Families should check their individual school's page for kindergarten orientation details.
Canyons District's online registration opens Monday, August 3, at 8:30 a.m., as we reported Wednesday, July 22. The district is rolling out an upgraded student information system called Skyward Qmlativ, which Canyons School District announced on its Instagram page. Returning families will log in through the same Family Access portal with their existing credentials.
New students who have never attended a Canyons school must first create a Skyward Family Access account by completing the New Student Online Enrollment form before August 3. Families needing help can contact their school or the Canyons Help Desk at 801-826-5544.

Granite District's full school year runs through Wednesday, May 26, 2027, with 180 instructional days planned. The district serves roughly 67,000 students across more than 93 schools in the Salt Lake Valley.
A Granite District Truth in Taxation public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, at 6 p.m., where residents can comment on a proposed 11.2% tax rate increase above the certified rate, according to the district's June 2 board meeting agenda.
