Holladay homeowners can get a $100 voucher toward a new tree through the city's Tree Voucher Program, one of several items the Holladay Tree Committee addressed at its Thursday, July 9, 2026, meeting at the Holladay Library.

The committee, chaired by Megan McGillivray, met at 4 p.m. at 2150 E. Murray Holladay Road. The posted agenda included a report on the committee's recent budget presentation to the City Council, a follow-up on disease treatment for trees at the Olympus Drive roundabout, a summary of tree voucher applications, and an update on filling committee vacancies.

Meeting minutes have not yet been published by the city.

How the voucher program works

Each voucher is worth $100 and can be redeemed at participating nurseries for approved species, including Rocky Mountain juniper, Norway maple, and flowering crabapple. There are two types: a Street Tree Voucher for right-of-way areas up to 15 feet from the road, and an Open Voucher for anywhere else on a homeowner's property.

This is not a reimbursement program. Residents cannot buy a tree first and submit a receipt. The voucher must be obtained before purchase. Applications are available at holladayut.gov.

"We've given out 12 vouchers in the last two months, and I think the Tree Committee is poised to give out a lot more," Council Member Matt Durham said in a May 2026 interview with the Holladay Journal.

Budget history

At the June 5, 2025, City Council meeting, Durham proposed increasing the Tree Committee's $2,500 annual budget by $1,000. The council discussed the increase favorably, according to approved meeting minutes. The committee's July 9, 2026, agenda listed a report back on its budget presentation to the council, but no updated dollar figures have been released.

The committee gave away 250 trees at its annual giveaway in May 2025, Durham reported at that same June 2025 council meeting. Tree talks and the voucher program were identified as the committee's focus areas for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Vacancies

The committee requires a quorum of seven members and is working to replace members whose terms have ended. The July 9 agenda noted an update on the progress of interviews for replacements.

The next Holladay City Council meeting is Thursday, July 16, 2026. Residents interested in applying for a tree voucher or serving on the Tree Committee can visit holladayut.gov or contact City Hall.
