Skyline's girls volleyball team lost 3-1 at Syracuse on Tuesday, Sept. 29, dropping the Eagles to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in 5A Region 6.

The Eagles won the first set 26-24 but couldn't sustain the momentum. Syracuse took the next three sets 25-22, 25-15 and 27-25 for its sixth straight win. The fourth set was the tightest, according to the Deseret News. Syracuse built a 20-17 lead before Skyline outside hitters Bailey Bennett and freshman Kova Symkoviak helped push the Eagles to a 24-23 set point. Syracuse called timeout and scored the final four points to close it 27-25.

Syracuse twin sisters Brinley and McKinley Barkdull combined for 40 kills in the match.

The loss is only the second in region play for head coach Mondo Begay's squad. Skyline had swept all six of its previous region opponents 3-0 before falling to Woods Cross on Sept. 16. The Eagles sit second in the Region 6 standings behind Woods Cross, according to MaxPreps.

Bennett and Symkoviak anchor the Skyline attack. Bennett earned Second Team All-State honors from the Deseret News in 2025. Symkoviak, in her first varsity season, led the Eagles with a .367 hitting percentage through Sept. 28, according to MaxPreps. Setter Evageline Lotulelei and hitters Maiya Afu and Brooke Bennett round out the Eagles' rotation.

The Eagles face a packed stretch ahead. Skyline travels to Viewmont for a region match Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6:30 p.m. A tournament home match against Corner Canyon follows Saturday, Oct. 3. The Eagles then play at Olympus on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Provo on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and host Brighton on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Skyline travels to Woods Cross on Tuesday, Oct. 13, for a region rematch. Woods Cross is unbeaten in region play at 6-0.
