Fifteen students pedaled to Olympus Junior High together Friday, Oct. 2, in the Holladay school's first-ever Bike Bus.

The group ride launched from Howard Driggs Elementary at 7:10 a.m. and rolled north on 2700 East. Riders stopped at the Olympus High School Aquatics Center on Lincoln Lane around 7:20 a.m. and Crestview Elementary around 7:25 a.m. The route then continued west on Albright Drive, crossed 4500 South onto Holladay Boulevard and turned onto Laney Avenue, reaching Olympus Junior High between 7:32 and 7:35 a.m., according to the school's announcement.

Principal Mike Douglas called the inaugural ride "a smashing success" in his message to families published Oct. 5. Parents and guardians were welcome to join the casual-paced ride.

The school plans to hold the Bike Bus on Friday mornings to avoid high school driving traffic along the route. Douglas said the school will announce the next ride date in a future message.

The Bike Bus capped a busy stretch at the Holladay school. The week of Sept. 29 through Oct. 3, Olympus Junior High held Connection Week, its version of Red Ribbon Week.

Activities included a Grit 5K run on Thursday, Oct. 1, a 7-foot-by-16-foot mural featuring every student's name, daily themed dress-up days and a bubble celebration on Saturday, Oct. 3. Student officers introduced the FIND acronym: Find someone new, Invite someone in, Notice things that matter to others and Do something for someone else.

The OJH PTA and a Connection Week Committee organized the events.

"Connection Week reminded us that schools are about much more than classes and grades. They are communities," Douglas wrote. "When students know they belong, are valued, and that people care about them, they are better prepared to learn, grow, and succeed."

Olympus Junior High, which enrolls about 807 students, also earned a spot on FOX 13's Cool School program. The segment is set to air Thursday, Oct. 22. The weekly program recognizes Utah schools; other Granite School District campuses, including Hunter High School and Eastwood Elementary, have been featured in the past.

Soccer finals are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12, at 3:00 p.m., and fall break runs Oct. 15–16 with no school on either day.
