Skyline's Elle Scott and Sophie Heimburger won the No. 1 doubles title at the UHSAA 5A girls tennis state championship Saturday, Oct. 3, at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
The pair defeated Woods Cross's Liza Eyring and Lillie Bennion in the final to bring home the Eagles' lone individual championship of the tournament.
Skyline finished third in the 5A team standings with 43 points, one point behind runner-up Hillcrest. Woods Cross claimed its third consecutive team title with 56 points, powered by depth across the lineup. Timpview (28) and Bountiful (15) rounded out the top five, as first reported by the Deseret News.
The one-point gap between Skyline and Hillcrest underscored how competitive the Eagles were across the draw. Beyond the doubles crown, Sofia Stahle advanced to the No. 1 singles semifinal before her run ended. Photo coverage from the tournament showed head coach Pam Waterman speaking with Stahle after a set in that semifinal match.
Stahle reaching the final four in No. 1 singles added valuable team points for the Eagles. Combined with the doubles title, Skyline's top entries both produced deep postseason runs at Liberty Park.
The tournament atmosphere drew praise even from the opposing sideline. Woods Cross head coach Jim Romera told the Deseret News after the Oct. 3 tournament, "We played to our potential. It was a great effort."
He also noted the caliber of play across the bracket. "It was great to watch such quality tennis and a high level of sportsmanship," Romera said.
The 5A state championship closes the fall girls tennis season. Scott and Heimburger finish it as state champions, and Skyline takes a third-place team trophy back to Holladay.
