Skyline sophomore Perry Shaffer closed region play as the best golfer in Region 6, finishing with a 69.3-stroke average and the medalist title.

Shaffer won two of the last three region tournaments, including a 66 at Ridge Golf Course in the final region match, the Deseret News reported Monday, Oct. 5. That late surge carried him past Olympus sophomore Wyatt Biagi, who held the region lead at a 71.2 average as of mid-September with two weeks of play remaining.

Skyline coach Kenny James told the Deseret News that Shaffer's composure sets him apart. "Perry has a very calm demeanor and doesn't seem to be bothered by important situations; he stays calm and doesn't let adversity get to him," James said. He called Shaffer's season "a great year in a very good region."

The 15-year-old is no stranger to pressure. As a freshman in 2025, Shaffer was part of the Skyline team that won the 5A state championship at TalonsCove Golf Course in Saratoga Springs, edging Olympus by a single stroke, 575 to 576. Shaffer shot a 149 over two days at that tournament, tying for 22nd individually. Senior Austin Shelley won the individual title in a playoff in 2025, and his graduation leaves a larger role for Shaffer this fall.

The Eagles enter the 5A state tournament with seven of the past eight state titles behind them. The Skyline athletics website described the 2025 crown as the program's "2nd State Championship trophy in 2 years." The 2026 tournament is set for the week of Oct. 12, according to the Deseret News, though the exact date and venue have not been announced.

Biagi and the Olympus Titans figure to be Skyline's chief competition again. Biagi was the fourth-scoring golfer for the Titans in their runner-up finish at the 2025 state tournament, and his strong region season signals another tight race between the two Holladay-area programs at states.
